And this program will focus on ICD-9-CM coding assignment in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF). Designed for medical record / health information department staff with basic knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding principles, this program will include review of the official coding guidelines for post acute care as required Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Participants will receive practice and coding exercises that will enhance their coding assignment skills, as well as correct identification of primary and secondary diagnosis at the time of admission to assure accurate reimbursement.

Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:
• Identify the four types of codes used in post acute care, Aftercare, Late Effects, Chronic and Acute
• Understand the use of V-codes to identify aftercare
• Correctly identify and assign ICD-9-CM codes
• Correctly identify primary and secondary diagnoses on admission to support reimbursement
• Understand the official coding guidelines for ICD-9-CM coding in post acute care settings.
